Ask a Designer!

8th of October 2013– By Tim

In a new monthly initiative we are offering one of our lucky followers some free design advice; all they had to do was send in a picture of their design dilemma and we’d provide the tips. For the month of September we chose Rachel who felt her brick fireplace was overwhelming her small living room.

We then asked out Creative Director for his expert opinion:

‘From the image you have sent we can see that the fireplace and chimney breast does indeed dominate the room. The brick is lovely and many people really want this but part of the problem is exasperated by the beam and the hearth being similar colours and tones. Depending on how much work you want to do and whether the fireplace is being used there are a few options. The key to making this work is to create some contrast in the materials.

One option would be to leave the brick as it is, paint the wooden beam a white or off- white, re-tile the hearth with a lighter limestone or similar tile and find a large painting or mirror that is in proportion to the chimney breast.

The alternative option is to leave the wooden beam and hearth and paint the brickwork white. This will immediately create a lighter feel, however, I would still find a painting or mirror that suits the proportions better’.

We really hope this advice helps Rachel to re-create a sense of balance and proportion whilst at the same time giving her living room a new lease of life.

If you would like to take part in next month’s design solutions all you have to do is post a picture of your design dilemma to our Facebook page with a brief description of your problem area.
