Design Trends: Best Design of 2013

20th of December 2013– By Tim

As the year is coming to an end we sat down with our award winning design team to see just what caught their eye in the world of interior design in 2013. The outcome is an eclectic mix of intelligent and innovative design. Take a look through our top picks of the year and let us know what you think.

Danni, “My favourite design of 2013 is more of a trend of ‘simplicity and space’. Minimalism is fundamental to this, however tactile features and a sense of touch is also key. A fantastic example of this trend is this bed which blends the combination of clean lines and a sense of intelligent reserved design, with the union of warm materials such as wood and cottons.

Tom, “We have sourced companies in 2013 who do some really nice antique effects with mirrors – Ellison Art Glass and Saligo Design. We are going to be installing a vintage mirrored splash back in the kitchen of one of our projects in January so looking forward to seeing that when it is finished. Definitely a good design idea for someone who is looking for something a touch different”.

Jessica, “One of my favourite designs from 2013 is the revival of the wingback chair. The trend has been to use new and innovative materials and fabrics with this design classic. Dead Good have been producing some excellent examples of this, a fantastic way to give you a modern look but with a nod to the past”.

Nikita, “My favourite design of this year is updating your used furniture by applying eye catching paint work and wallpaper. The idea of up cycling really excites me, it will boost your green credentials but it’s also a great way to get a new looks for your interior”.

Jons, “My design trend of 2013 is the use of hidden kitchens in small space design. It works perfectly within open plan homes, beautifully blending with living areas. All the cooking appliances you need are hidden behind feature walls which are designed to any style you desire and can look stunning. With the push of a button your kitchen is exposed, giving you the best of both worlds, a concealed yet conveniently at hand cooking space.

Finally, the design I most admired from 2013 is the incredible hammock bath by Splinter Works. Inspired by the synergy between the shapes of two symbols of relaxation, a hammock and a bath, a design piece that would provide total escapism was created. Designed for use in a wet room, the vessel is suspended from the walls and does not touch the floor. The bath is filled using a floor standing tap and the waste water released through the base into a floor drain. For me, this design is the perfect combination of both beauty and intelligence.
