Because we have a bespoke approach to interior design and cabinet making, our team of master craftsmen have to be the absolute best when it comes to innovations within the woodworking industry. This article offers an insight in the process of applying a metal finish to wood.

To create this metal finish we use a wooden substrate, often MDF, and spray this with a primer. Priming wood provides additional protection and ensures a better adhesion of paint to the surface, increasing paint durability. After priming, the wood is sprayed in a relevant coloured base coat. For metal finishing we often use a British race green as base coat colour.

When the wood has its base coat, a lacquer is mixed with metal powder or metal flakes and is sprayed on the wood. The wood is finished by sanding it with very fine 3000 grit sandpaper and a final top coat for extra protection.

‘The idea is to create some sort of dept, which is often seen in real metals such as copper. Metals are often not uniformly coloured and are therefore exciting and charming’ says Sam Chennell, our workshop manager and one of the master craftsmen.
